My first true experience of Japan was in 2012, when I visited Tokyo with my younger brother. It was so hot I kept looking for shade to stand in. My brother was keen on soaking up the sun-rays, so he was happy to stay in the sun.

We visited Tokyo Tower, Daiba, Shinjuku, Ueno, Rikugien and many other places. Once of which was Tokyo DisneySea. My family had visited Disney World in Florida a few years before, but DisneySea is unique to Japan, so my brother and I decided to check it out.

It’s interesting because, just as Tokyo has DisneySea, Disney World has unique parks to the USA. One is called Epcot, and you can find a tiny slice of Japan there.

So my first experience of Japan actually came at Epcot.

Epcot has a ‘World Showcase’ area, with various countries having their own pavilion. There’s a UK zone with a British Pub, a German section with crystal souvenirs, and a Japanese area which has a Mitsukoshi store, a pagoda, a shrine gate and Taiko drummers.

I can remember walking through the Mitsukoshi store looking for some Japanese things to buy, watching the Taiko drummers rhythmically playing their drums, having my photo taken in front of the gate, and, for just a moment, trying to feel like I had stepped into Japan.

Then, it was off to the next pavilion — Morocco.
