Hello everyone!
Tea&Talk is run by my husband Lee and I, and we have a one-year-old son. He had his first birthday the other day. I’m going to talk about it in today’s blog.
As everyone living in Japan knows, it is customary for children to carry an issho-mochi rice cake on their back to mark their first birthday. Our son carried an issho round-loaf of bread, not a rice cake! His grandmother (my mother) found the bread in a bakery, and she thought it sounded just right for our son because he has both Japanese and British roots.
Our son hasn’t started to walk yet, so he couldn’t carry the bread and step forward, but he carried it on his back and tried to crawl! When he moved, he fell on his face then cried, and that was the end of it!
One good point of using bread instead of a rice cake is everyone can enjoy eating it including the baby, while babies are not supposed to eat rice cakes yet. Our son loves bread, so he enjoyed eating his birthday bread!
We hope he always enjoys sharing two cultures!
