Over the years I’ve had many favourite albums. Once, it was Paul Simon’s Graceland, another time it was Don’t Stand Me Down by Dexy’s Midnight Runners. But for the past eight years, it has consistently been the same album; Pet Sounds.
The Beach Boys were busy touring the world while lead Beach Boy Brian Wilson stayed in the USA putting together Pet Sounds. It was a clear departure from their usual surf, cars and girls formula.
The wonderful harmonies and melodies of their previous albums however remained, and joined by interesting lyrics and clever chord choices, these songs took on new creative heights for the boys from California.
The album covers a variety of themes, from hopes, dreams and love (both reciprocated and unrequited), to feelings of inferiority. A mixed bag to be sure, but all of them explored in the most beautiful manner.
It’s my favourite album for a variety of reasons; the lyrics, the perfect combination of The Wrecking Crew and the boys’ harmonising voices, the arrangements, that wall of sound, and so many more.
If you get a chance I recommend taking a listen to Pet Sounds. Who knows, it may even become your favourite, too.
