London's Parks

London has been almost as hot as Sendai this summer, which is a real rarity. London temperatures in summer usually average around 23℃, but this July has been roasting, reaching 33℃!

So what can you do if you’re in London on such a swelteringly hot day? The best advice is probably to stay out of the sun! But if you’re prepared to withstand the heat, here are a few parks you might consider.

Hyde Park

Hyde Park is home to more than 4000 trees, a lake, a meadow*, flower gardens and the Princess of Wales Memorial fountain -- somewhere to cool off!

You can do so much at Hyde Park — you can enjoy swimming, boating, cycling, skating and more. There is a children’s playground for those who want to enjoy the park with young ones, too.

There are two restaurants at Hyde Park that sit by the lake, so you can get a lovely three-course meal (or just a cuppa) and enjoy the view.

Greenwich Park

Pronounced GREN-ich, Greenwich Park has breathtaking views of the River Thames and the City of London. If you’re lucky you might even catch a glimpse of the local deer.

There’s also the Prime Meridian Line, which is used to set the time around the globe. Stand on the line and you are at exactly GMT+0.

There are three cafes at Greenwich park: The Tea Pavilion, which has a beautiful large garden; St Mary’s Gate, which is near the National Maritime Museum; and The Honest Sausage, which is near the Royal Observatory.

The Regent’s Park

Designed in 1811 by architect John Nash, The Regent’s Park includes a stunning rose garden, an open air theatre, a boating lake and London Zoo.

If you walk to the top of Primrose Hill you’ll see one of London’s best views, a panorama of the city.

There are of course many more parks in London to enjoy, whatever the weather. Next time you're in London, take a little time to check out some of the parks. I'm sure you won't regret it.

* A meadow is a piece of grassland, or low ground near a river. Another word for meadow is ‘lea’. My name, Lee, comes from this word.
